FIX: “The Application HTC Sense (process com.htc.launcher) has stopped unexpectedly”
The Problem
Someone reported the other day that their phone was coming up with an error saying:
Sorry!
The Application HTC Sense (process com.htc.launcher) has stopped unexpectedly. Please Try Again.
The only option available was Force Close, and soon as that was pressed the message would appear again.
The Cause
In this particular instance the problem was caused by the user deleting some old homescreens. However, it can be caused by any other action related to HTC Sense. If the HTC Launcher app detects problems it becomes stuck in this loop and makes your phone unusable by constantly springing up that error message.
The Solution
NOTE: by doing this you will lose all your custom homescreens and will have to customise them again.
These are the instructions I provided which seemed to solve the problem:
- Press the Search button on your phone
- Type in Settings and select it from the results
- Select Applications > Manage Applications > HTC Sense > Clear Data
- Press the Home button
- You should now see the default wallpaper and widgets
- Try adding a widget. Either:
- Press the +icon in the bottom-right > Widget
- Press Menu > Add to Home > Widget
- Long-press an empty space on your homescreen > Widget
- If you find that the HTC widgets are missing from the Add Widgets list go to Settings and repeat steps 3 and 4
Final Word
This fix applies to problems caused by performing an action related to HTC Sense. In some cases it can be caused by incompatible applications, in which case the general solution would be to go to Settings using the method described above, then Applications > Manage Applications > Select the app you think is causing the problem and uninstall it.
In the worst case scenario, you would need to backup all your data and applications (MyBackupPro is great for this) and then perform a factory reset of your phone.
Suggestions
This was the fix I suggested and it worked well for the user. If anyone has experienced this problem and found an alternate solution please feel free to post in the comments or email me and I’ll get it added into this post. Thanks!

Fixed my problem thanks alot especially when the cell company claimed they had no idea what was going on and how to fix it. Tip- when you type in settings on search tab don’t click death at that point it will take you straight to Google. Instead what a minute or two and options will pop up below. Click on the settings that has a wheel like figure beside it. That will take you to your phone settings.

It worked on my HTC Hero. At first I did get the google search too, but then as Margaret said above that if after you type in settings or applications you wait a few seconds for other options to pop up, look for the wheel like symbol and will say “HTC search” in smaller letters under the word “applications” then click on that. Good luck. It did save my phone.

well that did’nt worked for me. But i did it this way:
I downloaded free “pro laughter” (if you only if you can use google you can search for market there and then download it!) The it will come up a dialog askig you if you want to use pro laughter of htc sense. Use pro laughter.
When you done that everyting will look strange and unfamiliar. But do not worry, it’s only temporary!
Then you go to settings and do what the guy over want you to do! (but first remove pro laughter!)
That’s, just how i did it!Like or Dislike:

I was getting so frustrated with my phone (HTC Evo 4G) because it kept on popping up that error message and I had to press either “wait” or “force close.” I applied their instructions here and it appears to have worked. Thanks very, very much!! I appreciate your time and assistance with this issue!

I have the EVO, I just updated to 2.3 “Gingerbread”. As soon as the update finished, I got that error msg: “Sorry! The Application HTC Sense (process com.htc.launcher) has stopped unexpectedly. Force Close” on a continuous loop. It didn’t give me a chance to click on menu, or apps, or Home. HTC Sense is the “Home” Screens and its like “Windows Explorer” on a computer, if it doesn’t work, you can still use the comp in the background.
Every time I saw someone in the forum who has an EVO and had fixed this problem, I tried to figure out what they did, but they didn’t explain it fully. So I decided to explain it in full details. After going through this, and other forums, I finally found a solution…The problems with many of the ideas listed, are that the EVO doesn’t have the Settings in places like other phones..
When i held down the search button “Search” (magnifying glass), it gave me an option to “voice search” and that would only search Google, not the phone!! No matter what I tried, I could not find a way to get to “phone settings”!!!So after spending a couple of hours trying to figure it out, I finally found the solution for the HTC EVO….
I “voice searched” on Google for “Android Market”. This took me to the online market. then i searched for an App that I already have, (which if you don’t, then just download it {free}) called “Advanced Task Killer”….. (other task managers may also allow you to do this)..
Once in the App I clicked on “Menu”, then I clicked on “Service”.
That takes you to the Applications page in Settings…Then I followed Steps that I had seen earlier in the Forum: (start at step 3)
“NOTE: by doing this you will lose all your custom homescreens and will have to customise them again.
1.Press the Search button on your phone
2.Type in Settings and select it from the results
3.Select Applications > Manage Applications > HTC Sense > Clear Data

I didn’t have to Hard Reset my phone! Its people like you that make this age of technology so great!! Keep it up ALL of you!!!

I had the exact same problem, but I fix it.
On my Evo I held down the magnify symbol, was able to say androidmarket, click on the site. Once there I type on search bar on website on far right top corner. I type Android assistance. Downloaded that application. Once dowloaded, I slides down the bar icon on my fone and click the application. Once I got in to the application look thru this, find the sence on there, so I kinda rush thru this but its there if you look. Once you find it “sence” click it and the setting should appear, there’s a default click it, then clear all data after that. Click home button and it should reload and take time. Bammm your fones fixx. Best advice in future, look up application online and see what type of errors appear before hand.Like or Dislike:
