HOW TO: Setup Hotmail Emails On Your HTC Desire
Hotmail offer a free POP3 service which allows you to receive all your emails on your HTC Desire. If you have a @hotmail.com address then it’s really easy. You just enter your email and password in the Mail application and it does the rest of the setup for you.
If You Have A @live.com or @hotmail.co.uk Account:
- If you have a @hotmail.com email address then stop here. Read the first paragraph of this article, because that’s all you need
- Open the Mail app on your Desire
- If you already have another email account setup then press Menu > More > New account
- Select Other (POP3/IMAP).
- Select Manual setup at the bottom
- Enter the following settings:
Protocol: POP
Email address: your email address
Username: your email address again (full)
Password: your account password
POP Server: pop3.live.com
Security Type: SSL
Server Port: 995 - Press Next and the Outgoing server settings screen will appear
If you get an error message at this point double-check all the settings above. Make sure your username is the same as your email address. - For the Outgoing Server Settings use the following options (bear in mind quite a few of the boxes will already be filled in for you):
Login required: Make sure it’s checked/ticked
Username: Your full email address
Password: Your Hotmail password
SMTP Server: smtp.live.com
Security Type: TLS
Server Port: 25 - Press Next
- Give it a meaningful Account name (this just comes up on your Accounts list – it’s not displayed on outgoing emails)
In Your name enter your actual name – this is what will appear as the “From” value on outgoing emails - Press Finish Setup
- Your account is now setup. You can press Menu > More > Settings to configure options such as:
- Disable the “Sent from my HTC” signature
- Change how frequently your Hotmail account is checked
- Change how you’re notified of new email
- Loads more, just have a look yourself!
FAQ
- I get “Cannot connect to the mail server to verify your account information. Your server is not responding” message when I press Next on the Outgoing Server Settings screen
A: Try server port 587 instead of 25
Final Word
This article is a response to many people who’ve asked me how to do this on their Desire. I’ve always pointed them to webpages with the Hotmail POP3 settings but thought it’s about time I wrote it up as a step-by-step.
If you have any questions, notice any errors, or have extra information regarding this guide then please post in the comments or send me an email. Thanks!

iv done this too. dont worry about it too much though because end of the summer hotmail id being updated with windows live mail wave 4 (thus all the tv ads). this will mean activesync support, push email and a much easier to set up and nicer interface for your hotmail on your android device

This was the first site I visited to set up my Hotmail but I’ve tried all the settings possible on my Desire from this and other sites and forums.
I can recieve emails but can’t send them. I’ve tried connected and disconnected to the WiFi and computer and purely thru the GPRS/WAP again , in but not out. Google mail (unsurprisingly) works perfectly.
I’ve tried port 25 and 587 with and without security and still nothing. Any ideas? I’ve also started again several times and turned it on and off …. hmmmLike or Dislike:

My hotmail emails send & receive fine but disappear from my inbox on the phone after 1 day which is very annoying when I want to reply to an email I received the previous day its no longer there? I have to go to the hotmail site to sign in and reply via there.
Maybe I’m being dense & missing some simple setting to stop this happening but I can’t seem to work it out.Like or Dislike:

If in case you follow the above instructions and still cant login, check your password. Windows Live has a limitation on passwords having more than 16 characters. As we are using pop3.live.com it will not accept our passwords which are more than 16 characters long. Change your password via hotmail.com in your computer and you would be able to configure hotmail.com accounts in your HTC desire.

I am using hotmail and can receive the emails fine, however if I delete emails from my phone, they don’t show straight after I delete them but next time I go to my mail (again on the phone) all the emails are back.. it is sooo anyong and wastes my time. It kind of has a mind of its own and works randomly. Is there anything I have to modify in the settings? Will it better to use the gmail account? Can I use both? I have just created a gmail account and are more familiar with my hotmail one and in fact haven’t given the gmail one to anyone, it would be a bit of a pain to have to inform people to change my contact email. Help please
