HOW TO: Setup Hotmail Emails On Your HTC Desire
Hotmail offer a free POP3 service which allows you to receive all your emails on your HTC Desire. If you have a @hotmail.com address then it’s really easy. You just enter your email and password in the Mail application and it does the rest of the setup for you.
If You Have A @live.com or @hotmail.co.uk Account:
- If you have a @hotmail.com email address then stop here. Read the first paragraph of this article, because that’s all you need
- Open the Mail app on your Desire
- If you already have another email account setup then press Menu > More > New account
- Select Other (POP3/IMAP).
- Select Manual setup at the bottom
- Enter the following settings:
Protocol: POP
Email address: your email address
Username: your email address again (full)
Password: your account password
POP Server: pop3.live.com
Security Type: SSL
Server Port: 995 - Press Next and the Outgoing server settings screen will appear
If you get an error message at this point double-check all the settings above. Make sure your username is the same as your email address. - For the Outgoing Server Settings use the following options (bear in mind quite a few of the boxes will already be filled in for you):
Login required: Make sure it’s checked/ticked
Username: Your full email address
Password: Your Hotmail password
SMTP Server: smtp.live.com
Security Type: TLS
Server Port: 25 - Press Next
- Give it a meaningful Account name (this just comes up on your Accounts list – it’s not displayed on outgoing emails)
In Your name enter your actual name – this is what will appear as the “From” value on outgoing emails - Press Finish Setup
- Your account is now setup. You can press Menu > More > Settings to configure options such as:
- Disable the “Sent from my HTC” signature
- Change how frequently your Hotmail account is checked
- Change how you’re notified of new email
- Loads more, just have a look yourself!
FAQ
- I get “Cannot connect to the mail server to verify your account information. Your server is not responding” message when I press Next on the Outgoing Server Settings screen
A: Try server port 587 instead of 25
Final Word
This article is a response to many people who’ve asked me how to do this on their Desire. I’ve always pointed them to webpages with the Hotmail POP3 settings but thought it’s about time I wrote it up as a step-by-step.
If you have any questions, notice any errors, or have extra information regarding this guide then please post in the comments or send me an email. Thanks!

HELP! Followed step by step and there were no errors encountered however when I refresh my mail to download mail it says I have no mail. What can I do to fix this? I’ve already tried deleting the account and starting from the beginning…. The ff instructions for hotmail itself did not work either…. http://windowslivehelp.com/solution.aspx?solutionid=f49bdf1f-8bb9-47e4-9633-e3a6ba15e2f8
Hope you can help me!

Hello,
I can receive and send emails from my hotmail using HTC Desire HD. However, while sending, it shows only email addresses of people from my Facebook account. I’m unable to send to people in my hotmail address book. Actually I can but have to type them in manually which is not convenient at all. Please advise. Thank you.

Also on T-Mobile with HTC Desire HD and having the same issue, I can receive emails but can’t send any from my hotmail,co.uk account. Have deleted account and tried to set it back up but doesn’t accept TLS for Outgoing Server Security.
Have downloaded windows live app and working ok, but not as quick. It will do for now until a fix is sorted by T-MobileLike or Dislike:

Thank you for the instructions.
I have been using hotmail for over a year and it worked perfectly.
Last night an email was sent to all my contacts, it contained a link with appearently a virus.
Since this morning emails do come in, but I cannot sent out any emails from my HTC desire. It does work from hotmail on my PC.
I checked all the settings (using your post) all setting seem to be perfectly ok.
Any idea what could be causing my problem?

I have tried all the above instructions, changing from 287 to 25, changing the smtp to tmobile.co.uk and removing login required etc, retyping my password. All the steps were very clear but none have worked, when i get rid of the original message it says it will not support tls.
Any other help any one has would be appreciated??? HTC have been useless!!!!
Thanks

I found this site after a lot of searching, and i hope someone can solve my problem. I have a htc desire z and since yesterday my live-mail doesn’t work anymore.
I deleted the account, but when entering the pop3 settings, my phone tells: autentication failed. I’m sure my password and mailadress are correct. What is wrong?Like or Dislike:

Just spent 2 hours trying to get my “.co.uk” Hotmail account working on HTC Desire HD. JUST tried a tip (off another site) of changing my password from 16 to 8 chars………………..it NOW works…………Thanks for the tip
Here’s the tip:
seekingmemoses2nd April 2011, 12:50 AM
Hooray! After hours and hours of searching various web forums, I never found an answer to the question I and several others had on why I could never get the HTC Sense Mail app to log into my Hotmail account (“Authentication Failed”. And then, all of the sudden, I had an epiphany: I had strengthened up my Hotmail password before receiving this new phone and wondered if that was the culprit. My original password was 17 characters long, so I tried using a shorter password (10 characters or less) and SUCCESS!
Although I have an Inspire 4g, the same should be true for a DHD or any other phone running Sense 2.
It appears that the HTC app is not capable of sending a longer password for verification, and likely chops part of it off when sending to Microsoft.

Your site is amazing! Thanks so much. Had spent AGES trying to send hotmail from my desire phone, found this article, read it, acted on it and bingo, it worked!it was the typing of the 25 from previous figure of 587 in the outgoing settings that did it. How can so many other sites be so wrong?
